Citywide Non Motorised Transport Project
Nonqubela Station, Khayelitsha
Non-Motorised Transport projects have been aimed at providing pedestrian, cycle and all forms of alternative non-motorised facilities between public facilities & amenities in local communities. The pedestrian & cyclist are the lowest-common denominator for transport, so the designs are focused on these modes. The intention is to create visual & physical links or connections within communities, & between communities that were previously or currently disconnected. As many of these projects are adjacent to Public Open Spaces or recreational facilities ,active & passive recreational spaces were identified for each project and included in the planning, design & detailed development since upgrading Public Open Spaces & core communal areas improve the quality of life. Another focus of NMT projects is empowerment of local individuals through the National Expanded Public Works Project Programme (EPWP) which ensures accredited training courses in mosaic, horticulture & other skills that benefit unskilled workers who show potential with labor-intensive construction. This project is located in the heart of Khayelitsha & is aimed at linking the train station with public facilities. A Public Open Space was identified for upgrading. The community were involved extensively.
