Educare Parking Area, Upper Campus
This project was borne out of the need for additional parking on campus. The site was originally a recycling and green waste site located within the UCT Upper Campus forest which forms part of the heritage landscape backdrop of the iconic campus, mainly consisting of Pinus sp. Trees, some of which were identified in a previous report as being senescent.
Existing trees were reviewed in terms of condition and where impacted by the new layout, were intended for replacement to mitigate loss. The landscape rehabilitation response to a hard surface parking area provided a research opportunity to mitigate Urban Heat Island Effect & apply Water Sensitive Urban Design principles in proposing a swale to capture water on site prior to run-off in the conventional storm water drainage system.
